"It Doesn't Have To Be" Workshop / 10 & 11 November 2018

The weekend of the 10th and 11th of November was momentous for us. We hosted a two-day workshop with learners from under-resourced schools in Cape Town at the Sexual & Reproductive Justice Coalition's Headquarters in Claremont.

Together, we discussed what we would like to gain from Life Orientation and Sexual & Reproductive Health & Rights, created a brave and inclusive environment to share senstive conversation and experiences, educated each other and spoke openly about what ourselves and our peers are desperately in need of when it comes to understanding ourselves and the world around us.

We created art as therapy and used it to interrogate our thinking and the way we view current societal issues.

We had sessions on safe-sex for all sexual orientations, spoke about Gender Identity and Expression, we spoke about our bodies, our wants, our needs, our families, friends and the pressures of society.

This workshop and the attendees who formed part of it will be part of co-creating a Comprehensive Sexual Education manual. This Manual will be called: "It Doesn't Have To Be..." and will serve the purpose of providing feminist information regarding Life Orientation for the youth of South Africa.

Schools who were in attendance include: Steenberg Secondary, Marian RC, Simon's Town and Ocean View Secondary.

There were students from the 'Safe Space Project' based at the University of Cape Town who assisted in holding space and keeping the conversation interesting and easily understandable.

We implore the public to assist us in making this manual a fast and effective reality by donating to our organisation.
